How to be a Good Bookseller

1. Not deeply read, widely read.

2. Nobody came for your political opinions, they came to buy a book.

3. Shelve the damned books already!

4. Your store is not the Library of Congress, stock what sells, send back what doesn’t.

5. Stay on the sales floor as much as possible.

6. Don’t try to elevate your customers. Romance readers want romances and there is nothing wrong with that.

7. Know your tools, know your stock.

8. Don’t be discouraged by people who don’t pick up their special orders.

9. Be available, don’t bury yourself in a corner where customers can’t find you.

10. Let the customer talk more than you.
